Aegle is a break reminder that lives in the macOS menu bar. It needs macOS 13 or later.

Where is the app? There is no Dock icon.

Aegle runs in the menu bar only. Click its icon at the top of the screen for the menu, which holds today's statistics, Settings and Quit.

How do the breaks work?

By default Aegle asks for a 20-second break to look into the distance after every 20 minutes of work, and a 3-minute break to get up after every 50. Only time you are actually at the computer counts, so the clock stops while you are away. All four numbers can be changed in Settings.

Why did the countdown stop?

The break countdown only runs while you are away from the keyboard. Typing, clicking or scrolling holds it still, because a break you work through is not a break. Moving the mouse does not count, so bumping it costs nothing.

Why does the break stay on screen after it finishes?

When the countdown reaches zero, the break waits for you to click Done — back to work. Work time starts counting again from that click, so a longer break is never counted as work.

Can I postpone or skip a break?

Snooze 5 min postpones it, up to twice in a row. To skip a break entirely, press and hold Skip for two seconds.

I have a meeting or a presentation.

Choose Pause for 1 hour or Pause until I resume from the menu. Breaks are also held back automatically while an app is full screen, and made up afterwards.

Breaks never appear, and the menu says they are held back.

Aegle decides an app is full screen by checking whether the menu bar is covered. If your menu bar is set to hide automatically, that check goes wrong. Turn off Don't interrupt full-screen apps in Settings.

I came back to my desk and no break was due.

Being away for as long as a long break lasts, three minutes by default, counts as a break already taken, so the timers start again when you return.

How do I start Aegle automatically?

Turn on Launch at login in Settings. Aegle has to be in your Applications folder for this to work.

How do I change the language?

Aegle follows your system language, in English or Chinese. To choose one yourself, use the language picker in Settings.

Where is my data, and how do I remove it?

Settings and statistics are kept only on your Mac, in ~/Library/Containers/com.kubilo.aegle. They do not sync between Macs. To remove everything, delete Aegle from your Applications folder and then delete that folder. See the privacy policy for details.
